COMPUTER FOR LEARNING PROJECT

Would your parish like to assist with an ongoing project started by the Australian Karen Foundation?

The project is on the Thai Border and is a Senior School at Mae La, Refugee Camp

The school was inaugurated in August 2006 after consultations by the Australian Karen Foundation with the Karen Anglican Committee of Mae La camp’s 40,000 population.

Whilst education in the camps is provided until year 10, there are very few opportunities for further learning.

The camp Committee decided that focussing on English and IT was important. As a result the Anglican Language and Computer Centre was launched with 50 students.

Some computers have been secured but additional ones are needed.

Obviously it is possible to find surplus computers in Australia, but the cost of sending them makes it prohibitive and is much cheaper to purchase overseas.
Not only that, new purchases mean that all computers are the same make.

The Foundation is seeking to raise funding for ongoing wages, computers and soft ware and need a little over $12,000 to achieve this dream.

Should you wish to participate in this exciting endeavour, can we suggest you make contact with the parish supporting this overall project (Saint Thomas' Werribee).

Currently $2000 has been raised and sent to the camp (May 2008)

As a further support to parishes interesting in assisting, as the project further unfolds, we would send to you, photos and reports of the computer project so parishioners could feel more involved.
